Outside the office, one of AJA’s staff has a rather exotic taste in pets.
Senior Acoustics Consultant Mat Tuora has always loved animals, and has built up a small menagerie since being given a pair of bearded dragons as a teenager. He and his partner Tasha may appreciate conventional pets, but they also enjoy caring for lizards, snakes and other unusual animals.
Reptiles hold a particular fascination and Mat’s collection includes a couple of crocodile skinks named Smaug and Toothless, a bumblebee python called Narcella and Khoshekh, the crested gecko.
Mainly active at night, Mat’s collection of creatures are relatively shy – apart from Khoshekh the gecko who likes to jump about. They feed on anything from fruit pots to mice and have lifespans of five to 30 years.
Although they are all harmless and quite docile, occasionally the odd one has gone for a wander around Mat’s house. Narcella the python was once found sleeping under some bags after an enclosure door was laft ajar. The pets can be quite a surprise for visitors to Mat’s home, but most of his friends are curious about the animals and soon lose any fear they might have.
As for Mat’s ultimate dream pet, he would love to own a tegu or a cayman. Given the special requirements of each creature, it’s just as well that Mat can ensure his animals have a caring environment in his home (and away from the office).
