Priscilla Bacon Lodge is a palliative care facility with administrative and training facilities. It was purpose-built to replace an ageing building in the centre of Norwich. Opened in late 2023, it provides beds for 24 inpatients and daycare facilities. There is a wellness centre, a gym and a community hub with gardens, water features and views of the Norfolk countryside.
Our involvement commenced in early 2021, with a proposed site near the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, on the outskirts of Norwich.
The building consists of two main sections with different constructions. The healthcare facilities are a traditional masonry build and the two-storey administrative and training area is a steel frame construction.
A registered charity, the hospice is an NHS partner organisation and was built to achieve HTM 08-01:2013 requirements. Our input as acoustics consultants was to carry out a noise survey to advise on the design of the building envelope, mitigating noise intrusion. We provided acoustic design advice to achieve the requirements of HTM 08-01:2013 through RIBA design stages 3 to 5.
Our advice included:
- Proposing suitable criteria for internal ambient noise levels, sound insulation and absorptive finishes.
- Proposing and reviewing wall and floor constructions.
- Reviewing acoustically critical details.
- Carrying out value engineering exercises.
- Reviewing plant noise levels.
Upon completion, we also carried out acoustic commissioning to demonstrate compliance with HTM 08-01:2013.
The hospice was officially opened by King Charles III in October 2023.
