Noise and vibration management and assessments are specialist areas within the field of acoustics. Adrian James Acoustics provides noise and vibration reports ranging from individual items of mechanical plant to major infrastructure projects.
Major infrastructure
In 2020, East Suffolk Council approached us to review and advise them on environmental noise and vibration assessments and management plans submitted for the proposed Sizewell C nuclear power station. We also made representations to the Planning Inspectorate Examiners during specialist technical hearings.
With the main site occupying a large area of land, construction could take twelve years to complete. Our input was therefore particularly important as the site is in a relatively quiet and tranquil rural location.

Wind farms
Wind farms can present major challenges with noise and vibration, especially onshore sites.
AJA reviewed the environmental noise and vibration aspects of the Environmental Statements and other technical submissions for the onshore infrastructure serving two proposed large offshore wind farms, known as East Anglia ONE North and East Anglia TWO. We assisted East Suffolk Council’s officers and legal representatives in technical discussions with the Applicant, external consultants and the Planning Inspectorate Examiners. This included making representations on behalf of the Council at meetings and examination hearings.
Environmental Statements
Environmental issues have never been more in the spotlight. Along with global concerns, there are constant changes to the built environment which demand expert assessment. New housing, roads, major infrastructure and other developments often require an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) accompanied by an Environmental Statement (ES). This in turn often includes a Noise and Vibration chapter.
Adrian James Acoustics has a long history of writing and reviewing reports of this type.

Plant and noise vibration
Appropriate assessment and management of environmental noise and vibration from fixed plant, particularly commercial and industrial plant, is critical.
Our experience in analysing a wide range of equipment serving many different functions can help avoid costly mistakes and ensure legal compliance.
Whether your project involves complex strategic planning, or more simple plant replacement, we recommend calling one of our Associates who are always happy to discuss issues relating to plant or environmental noise and vibration.
