Suppose you are planning a new housing development, particularly in an area vulnerable to transport noise. In that case, the local authority may require a noise assessment to be submitted with your planning application.
NPPF
Planning Policy Guidance 24 “Planning and Noise” (PPG24) outlines considerations to be taken into account in determining planning applications for noise-sensitive developments near transport-related noise sources. Since 2012 the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) has been in place. The NPPF does not set specific criteria or methodology for assessing transport noise so many local authorities refer to PPG24.
Day and night
Local authorities will usually require daytime and nighttime noise levels inside the proposed housing to meet the criteria set out in the World Health Organisation Guidelines for Community Noise.
Upgrade
You may need to upgrade the building envelope in noisy areas, such as near busy roads, railways or airports. This can include using better glazing or silenced ventilation to achieve reasonable noise levels indoors. We have many years of experience in advising on this as part of our assessment.
