Padel tennis continues its rapid rise across the UK and beyond.
Growing Popularity
Blending elements of squash and traditional tennis, padel has become one of the fastest growing sports worldwide. Originating in Mexico, it now boasts more than 35 million players globally, including almost half a million in the UK.
Its appeal spans all ages and abilities, which explains why dedicated padel centres are opening nationwide and why many traditional tennis courts are being converted to meet demand. As of January 2026, Norfolk alone had 23 courts across eight venues.
Noise Concerns
With this growth has come an increase in noise-related complaints, particularly where courts are located close to residential areas. Padel noise differs from other racquet sports because of the different types of racquets used, and because the ball frequently strikes the surrounding mesh walls. The energetic nature of the game also means players often raise their voices during play.
Dispute
As independent environmental noise consultants, we have spent extensive time measuring and assessing padel noise in real world settings. Our work has included presenting technical evidence for a recent noise nuisance case where the noise levels were under dispute.
There is no single standard for measuring and assessing noise from padel and Local Planning Authorities are now taking the potential noise impact of padel very seriously. As such, proper assessment requires an understanding of the sport and the different approaches to assessment. We typically reference various UK and international standards and guidelines, as well as carefully condsidering potential changes to the ambient noise environment.
Noise Barriers
Noise barriers can often help reduce the impact on nearby properties, although the semi-enclosed design of padel courts already provides some natural acoustic screening. Many new courts are also being fitted with overhead canopies, which can significantly reduce noise by reflecting sound back toward the court rather than outward into the surrounding area.
