“We’ve received numerous comments from visitors that they are gobsmacked by how well designed the new building is.” This remark came from Steve Smith, CEO of Havens Hospices, upon completion of the Fair Havens Hospice in Southend-on-Sea.

The architects behind Fair Havens were LSI – a practice renowned for its award-winning design of the Arthur Rank Hospice in Cambridge. Providing specialist care for adults with life-limiting conditions, Fair Havens replaced two old former residential properties which had suffered from limited size and facilities.

Barnes Construction commissioned us to carry out the acoustic design and we overcame multiple challenges including high ceilings and hard surfaces. Each bedroom also enjoys views to a central courtyard and gardens – very therapeutic for the residents, but requiring excellent acoustic design to reduce reverberation problems.

All the parties involved recognised the importance of creating a calm atmosphere for this new purpose-built building. Through close co-operation with the architects and interior designers, we achieved a well-controlled acoustic environment without an over reliance on clinical finishes.

The result is an attractive living space for patients where they can enjoy the calm atmosphere which they deserve. Visitors and staff also benefit from the carefully considered acoustic design.
In the words of CEO Steve Smith, “our care staff…think the new hospice is amazing.”
