King’s Lynn is a typical North Norfolk market town. For over 500 years the Tuesday Market Place has been its trading centre. This site also serves as a car park and for three weekends every year hosts the spectacular Festival Too music festival. Large crowds flock to the Market Place to hear a wide variety of performers.

Recently we advised on the conversion of an office block into 26 apartments. The building known as Lovell House is close to the market square. In particular the client had to establish what forms of glazing and ventilation would meet the Council’s requirements.

We have previous experience in measuring noise levels from performances such as those at the Norfolk & Norwich Festival and Lowestoft’s First Light festival.
For King’s Lynn we were able to draw on data which we had measured in a previous year.

We also monitored noise from traffic and from the market so that all the data could be input into our CADNAa modelling software.

Part of our involvement involved lengthy discussions with the Council. As a result, we were able to give separate noise criteria for year-round traffic noise and short-term noise from the festival.

As with monitoring festivals elsewhere, our King’s Lynn surveys provided a basis for better decision making and for the client there were potential cost savings.
Our analysis of noise issues helps improve the outcome for all parties: the developer, council, residents and festival events organisers.
