We were approached to advise on reported problems with the sound system in Peterborough Cathedral. This beautiful building was completed in 1237.
Sound system
Like most cathedrals, it is a vast reverberant space. It relies entirely on a complex sound system so that the congregation can understand what is being said during services and other events.
Acoustic survey
We undertook an acoustic survey and audit of the system. This included examining all the control and signal processing systems. We also listened to speech through each of the one hundred loudspeakers while one of the vergers read psalms from the pulpit microphone.
Upgrade
We were pleased to report that extensive (and expensive) changes to the system were not required. We determined that almost all the problems could be solved by a simple upgrade of the touchscreen control system and adjusting some of the settings.
Savings
Given that a new cathedral sound system typically costs several hundred thousand pounds, we are pleased to have saved our client a great deal of money in a single day’s work.
